Subject: Let Teachers Learn

Dear Mr./Mrs.....,

Lifelong Learning has become the buzzword in the countries of the European Union. Yet it is increasingly more and more difficult for teachers, those who deliver the learning, to take a meaningful part in ongoing professional development and training. They are halted by significant financial and time constraints.

Social reality of our world is more complex everyday. Teachers face challenges stemming from information technology revolution and increasing diversity in the classrooms. Our toolbag has to include not only academic training we receive in the university, but also invaluable practical comparison of experiences and best practices, learned sensitivity and skills -- all parts of lifelong learning in international environment.

Survey conducted by EUROCLIO - The European Association of History Educators- shows that almost 60% of teachers will not be compensated for the full cost of the trainings they participate in, and also, almost 40% of teachers cannot take the time off of work to participate in training and professional development events without incurring a personal financial loss in some degree. Ultimately, less than 32% of history teachers in Europe receive full support towards training and development. Nearly 10% receive no support whatsoever and are ultimately unable to participate. Many of my colleagues don't have sufficient if any information about the lifelong learning opportunities and if they do, their access to such events in unequal in different regions and countries of Europe.

I turn to you to raise this issue on the floor of the European Parliament and its bodies. If lifelong learning is to become an everyday reality of our professional lives, it has to reach those who are in teaching professions. I am my colleagues in EUROCLIO will be happy to assist you with any further information you might need.

Sincerely yours,

...............
